Foreign Direct Investment in Ethiopia: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities

 By Getinet Babu  Abstract   Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays a critical role in the economic development of emerging economies by providing capital inflows, technological transfer, and employment opportunities. In Ethiopia, FDI has become a key driver of industrialization and integration into global value chains. Over the past decade, the Ethiopian government has implemented various economic reforms aimed at liberalizing markets and attracting foreign investors. This study analyzes the trends, challenges, and opportunities of FDI in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2025, with projections for 2026. Using secondary data from institutions such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Bank, and the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), the study examines the patterns of investment inflows, sectoral distribution, and policy reforms shaping Ethiopia’s investment climate.
